About this release

ZBrush does not work like other three dimensional applications and never has. It holds tens of millions of polygons in a way conventional viewports cannot, which means you can sculpt skin pores on a character while the whole figure is still in the scene, and it treats the model as a lump of material you push, pull, pinch and carve rather than a cage of vertices you select and move. Anyone coming from a conventional package finds the first day strange and the second day fast.

The brush library is the application. Standard, Move, Clay Buildup, Dam Standard, Trim Dynamic, hPolish, Inflate and Slash cover most of a sculpt between them, and each one takes alphas, strokes, falloff curves and surface behaviour that changes what it does completely. Beyond that sit the mesh generation tools: DynaMesh for reforming topology while you work, Sculptris Pro for adding density only where the detail needs it, ZRemesher for automatic retopology, ZModeler for hard surface polygon work, and Live Boolean for cutting shapes out of each other with a live preview.

Detail work carries down the pipeline properly. Subdivision levels let you move between a rough form and fine detail on the same mesh, and the detail projects onto a retopologised version so a production ready model keeps everything you sculpted. Displacement, normal and vector displacement maps bake out from the same place. Polypaint puts colour directly on the vertices with no UVs required, and UV Master generates a usable layout when you do need them.

The rest is the working environment. NanoMesh and ArrayMesh for repeating geometry, FiberMesh for hair and fur, posing with transpose and the rigging system, decimation for handing off a printable or renderable mesh at a sane polygon count, and a render engine with materials and lighting good enough for turntables and presentation frames without leaving the application.

What you get

  • Sculpting on meshes of tens of millions of polygons with a viewport built for it
  • Deep brush library with alphas, strokes, falloff curves and per brush surface behaviour
  • DynaMesh and Sculptris Pro for reforming and densifying topology while you sculpt
  • ZRemesher automatic retopology with guide curves and density painting
  • ZModeler for hard surface polygon modelling inside the same application
  • Live Boolean with a real time preview of the cut result
  • Subdivision levels with detail projection onto a retopologised mesh
  • Displacement, normal and vector displacement map baking
  • Polypaint for colouring vertices directly with no UVs required, plus UV Master
  • FiberMesh, NanoMesh, ArrayMesh, decimation and a built in render engine for presentation

Changes in this build

  • Sculpting responsiveness improved at very high subdivision levels
  • ZRemesher produces cleaner edge flow around creased and hard edges
  • New brush set added for surface detail and mechanical panelling
  • Decimation faster on multi subtool projects
  • Fixed a case where polypaint could be lost when a subtool was reordered

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive with ten gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network.
  3. Pause real time protection for the install.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and accept the default location.
  5. Close the installer instead of launching from it.
  6. Apply the licensing files from the included folder, start ZBrush and block it in your firewall.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, high single core speed matters more than core count here
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for very high polygon sculpts
GraphicsAny modern adapter, the application is mostly processor and memory bound
Storage10 GB free plus room for project files, which get very large
Display1920 by 1080 or higher, a pen tablet is close to essential

Notes from the desk

Memory is the real ceiling. A sculpt that will not subdivide further is almost always short of system memory rather than short of anything else.

Save incrementally. The application is stable but a project at forty million polygons is not something you want to rebuild.
