About this release

AutoCAD is the drafting application that set the file format everyone else has to read. DWG is the exchange currency of the entire built environment, and AutoCAD is where it comes from. Whatever else a practice runs, someone in the chain will send a DWG and expect it to open exactly as drawn.

The 2D documentation toolset is the core and it is enormous. Precise drawing with object snaps, tracking, dynamic input and constraints. Layers, layer states and filters. Blocks with attributes and dynamic parameters. Annotative scaling so text and dimensions size themselves per viewport. Dimension styles, multileaders, tables linked to spreadsheets, hatch patterns, external references, sheet sets and a plotting system with named page setups and plot styles.

The 3D side handles solid, surface and mesh modelling with a full set of boolean, sweep, loft and revolve operations, sectioning, visual styles and rendering. It is not a replacement for a dedicated modeller but it is more than sufficient for the massing, coordination and fabrication geometry that drafting work throws up.

This listing includes the industry toolsets rather than the plain base application. Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Map 3D, MEP, Plant 3D and Raster Design each add libraries, automated documentation and standards for their discipline, and they are what turns a general drafting package into something specialised.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Extract the archive to a local drive with twenty gigabytes free.
2. Disconnect from the network before starting the installer.
3. Run Setup.exe as administrator and select the toolsets you need.
4. The install takes a long time. Leave it alone.
5. Do not launch the application when it completes.
6. Apply the licensing step from the included folder, then start AutoCAD and choose a licence type when asked.
