SolidWorks is the mechanical design application that took parametric modelling out of the specialist world and into every machine shop and product company. The workflow is history based: you sketch, you apply a feature, and every feature stays editable in a tree you can reorder, suppress and roll back through. Change a dimension near the start and the whole part rebuilds around it.
Assemblies are where the design work actually happens. Parts mate together with real constraints, and the assembly understands degrees of freedom, so you can drag a mechanism and watch it move. Interference detection, clearance verification, exploded views, configurations for product variants, and top down design where a part is driven by geometry from the assembly around it.
Drawings come off the model with proper engineering intent. Section views, detail views, broken views, ordinate and baseline dimensioning, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, bills of material that update from the assembly, and balloon annotation that follows the parts list. This is the deliverable most of the industry still runs on and SolidWorks produces it cleanly.
Premium adds the specialised toolsets. Simulation for finite element stress, displacement and factor of safety analysis. Motion analysis for mechanisms. Routing for pipe, tube, electrical and duct runs. Sheet metal with flat pattern generation, weldments with cut lists, mould tooling with core and cavity separation, and the costing tool that estimates manufacture from the model geometry.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Consumer graphics cards work but produce visual artefacts in some display modes. A certified workstation card avoids this entirely.
Install only the add ins you need. A full Premium install with every module is significantly slower to start.
