Where this came from

1007MACFM began as a list of links kept in a text file by one person who was tired of losing track of where the good copies of things were. It grew because other people kept asking for the file, and at some point keeping it as a website was less work than emailing it out.

The shape of the site has stayed close to that original list. It is an index. Each entry is one piece of software, with everything you need to decide whether you want it and everything you need to install it once you do. There is no feed, no comment section, no reputation system and no account.

How an entry gets made

Every title on the index goes through the same process before its page exists. The archive is pulled from wherever it came from and the checksum is recorded. It is unpacked on a machine kept for this purpose and nothing else. The installer is run start to finish, offline, and whatever it does to the machine is watched. The application is then opened and used for long enough to confirm it is the build the file name claims and that the features it is supposed to have are actually there.

Only then does someone sit down and write the page. That write up is done by a person who has used the software, which is why the pages read the way they do and why the notes at the bottom of each one are specific rather than generic. If the install has a step that catches people out, it is in the list. If a feature does not work in this build, it says so.

Entries that fail any part of that do not get published. That happens more often than you would think, and it is the reason the index is small.

What the desk actually is

A handful of people, working through a shared queue. Requests come in through the requests form. Broken links come in through the report form. Rights holder notices come in through the DMCA page. All three go into the same queue and get worked through in order, with dead links jumping ahead because a broken entry is worse than a missing one.

There is no office and there is no company. Anyone telling you they represent 1007MACFM commercially, or asking you for money in connection with it, is not connected to this site.

Hosting

No file is stored on this site. Every entry points at storage somewhere else, and the index holds a record of the file name and checksum so that what arrives can be checked against what was listed. That is the extent of the relationship between this site and the files it lists.

Links are re checked on a rotation. When one fails it gets replaced, and the entry is marked while that is happening. Reports from readers are the fastest signal, which is why every download page carries a report link.

Editorial standards

Three rules, and they have not changed.

First, nothing goes up that has not been installed and run. Second, no archive on this index carries a password, because a password is how you stop someone inspecting what they downloaded. Third, the page tells you what the software is rather than what would make you click, which is why the write ups are long and why some of them tell you a title is not worth your time.
