WinRAR Professional
The archiver that reads everything and writes RAR and ZIP properly, with recovery records, solid archives and multi volume splitting.
File recovery from deleted, formatted, corrupted and unbootable drives, with a deep scan that rebuilds files from signatures when the file table is gone entirely.
Deleting a file does not erase it, it removes the entry pointing at it, and the data stays on the disk until something writes over that space. That is the whole basis of file recovery, and this tool is a competent implementation of it. A quick scan reads what is left of the file table and returns recently deleted items with their names and folder structure intact, usually in under a minute.
When the file table is gone, which is what a format or a corrupted partition means, the deep scan takes over. It reads the raw disk and identifies files by their internal signatures instead, which recovers the data but loses the original names and folder structure. Over a thousand file types are recognised, and the results are grouped by type with a preview so you can see whether a document or a photograph is actually intact before you spend time restoring it.
The preview is more useful than it sounds. Recovery is never complete and a partially overwritten file is worthless, so being able to look at a recovered image, play a recovered video or open a recovered document from within the results list saves an enormous amount of wasted restoration. Filtering by type, size and modification period narrows a scan returning half a million fragments down to the twenty things you actually wanted.
Beyond the basic case it handles the harder ones. A bootable environment can be written to a USB stick for machines that will not start, so the drive can be scanned without being removed. Lost or deleted partitions can be found and their contents recovered. Formatted and RAW volumes are handled. There is a video repair routine for recordings with damaged headers, a photograph repair routine for corrupted images, and support for scanning memory cards, USB sticks and external drives connected over USB.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

|---|---|

Stop using the affected drive the moment you notice the loss. Every write reduces what can be recovered, and that includes ordinary background activity.
Recovering to the same drive you scanned is the single most common way people destroy the files they were trying to save. Always restore somewhere else.
