About this release

Driver Booster scans the hardware in a machine, works out what driver each device is running, compares that against a large maintained database, and offers whatever is newer. It covers graphics from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel, chipset and storage controllers, audio, network adapters, printers, scanners, card readers, cameras and the long tail of peripherals that nobody thinks about until one stops working.

The value is mostly in the awkward cases. Current graphics drivers are easy to find yourself. A chipset driver for a laptop whose manufacturer stopped publishing downloads five years ago is not, and neither is the correct audio driver for a machine where the generic Windows one produces crackling. Those are the entries that make the scan worth running.

The safety side is handled properly. A system restore point is created before anything is written, and the application keeps its own backup of every driver it replaces, so a bad update can be rolled back from inside the interface without going through device manager. That is important because a bad graphics or storage driver can leave a machine unbootable.

There are extras beyond driver updating: a game boost mode that suspends background services, a set of common fixes for no sound, no network and resolution problems, and offline scanning that produces a report you can carry to a working machine and bring the drivers back on a stick. The Pro build removes the update limits and download throttling of the free version.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
2. Run the installer and decline the bundled extras on the offer screen.
3. Close the installer without launching the application.
4. Copy the unlock folder contents into the installation directory.
5. Block the executable in your firewall.
6. Launch it, take a restore point manually as well, then run your first scan.
