Mathematica is a single system that handles symbolic mathematics, numerical computation, visualisation, data handling and general programming in one language. The distinguishing feature is that symbolic and numeric work live together. You can derive an expression exactly, simplify it, differentiate it, then substitute values and evaluate it to a thousand digits without moving to a different tool or converting anything by hand.
The symbolic engine is the deepest part. Algebraic simplification, equation solving including systems and inequalities, calculus in one and many variables, differential equations both ordinary and partial, integral transforms, series expansion, limits, linear algebra on symbolic matrices, and number theory. Results come back as exact expressions that stay manipulable, so a solution can be fed straight into the next step rather than being read off and typed back in.
Numerics cover what the symbolic path cannot. Arbitrary precision arithmetic with tracked error propagation, root finding, optimisation both constrained and unconstrained, numerical integration and differential equation solving with automatic method selection, interpolation, statistics with a large distribution library, and machine learning functions for classification, regression, clustering and dimension reduction that take data in and return a usable model without a separate framework.
Everything happens in a notebook that is simultaneously the document and the program. Input cells, output cells, formatted text, headings, typeset mathematics and interactive controls sit in one file that can be published as a report. The visualisation layer draws two and three dimensional plots, vector fields, contour and density plots, graphs and networks, and geographic maps, all styleable to a consistent theme. Interactive manipulation wraps any expression in live controls with one function, which is why the system is used so heavily for teaching as well as research.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

The front end and the computation kernel are separate processes. If a calculation runs away, abort the kernel rather than closing the whole application and losing your notebook.
Notebooks store results alongside the input. Clearing outputs before saving keeps file sizes reasonable on documents with many plots.
