About this release

Multisim is the circuit simulator that teaches most engineers what SPICE actually does, and it stays useful long after that because the interface hides none of the underlying analysis. You draw a schematic with real parts from a component database of tens of thousands of devices, you drop a virtual oscilloscope onto the canvas, and you probe the circuit the way you would probe it on a bench. The results are a genuine SPICE solve, not an approximation drawn for teaching.

The virtual instrument panel is the feature people remember. Oscilloscopes with four channels and proper trigger controls, function generators, spectrum analysers, network analysers, logic analysers, word generators, distortion analysers, a bode plotter and multimeters, all modelled on hardware that exists and behaving like it under load. Wiring one into a running simulation gives you the same picture you would get in a lab, which makes the transition from simulation to bench far less jarring.

Underneath the instruments the analysis set is complete. DC operating point, transient, AC sweep, noise, distortion, Fourier, Monte Carlo, worst case, temperature sweep, parameter sweep, sensitivity, pole zero and transfer function analyses all run against the same netlist. Mixed mode simulation handles analogue and digital in the same schematic, and the ladder logic and microcontroller co-simulation extend that into embedded work.

The Professional edition includes the layout handoff, so a finished schematic passes into board layout with the netlist and footprints intact rather than being redrawn by hand. Component libraries carry manufacturer part numbers and models, and the database can be extended with your own parts and vendor supplied SPICE models.

What you get

  • Schematic capture with a component database covering tens of thousands of real devices
  • Full SPICE simulation engine with mixed analogue and digital modes
  • Virtual instruments modelled on real bench hardware including oscilloscopes and analysers
  • DC, transient, AC sweep, noise, distortion and Fourier analyses
  • Monte Carlo, worst case, temperature, parameter and sensitivity sweeps
  • Microcontroller co-simulation with assembly and C support
  • Ladder logic simulation for control and automation circuits
  • Board layout handoff with netlist and footprint transfer
  • Custom component creation with imported vendor SPICE models
  • Report generation covering bill of materials, netlist and component detail

Changes in this build

  • Component database updated with a large batch of current manufacturer parts
  • Faster convergence on switching supply circuits that previously stalled
  • Improved handling of very large schematics with hierarchical sheets
  • Interface scaling corrected on high resolution displays
  • Layout handoff reworked so footprint mismatches are reported before transfer

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive with fifteen gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network before you start the installer.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and choose a full installation.
  4. The component database takes a long time to build. Leave it alone.
  5. Do not launch the application from the installer's finish screen.
  6. Apply the licensing step from the included folder, then start Multisim and confirm the edition in the about panel.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, 2 GHz or faster
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large mixed mode schematics
GraphicsAny adapter with an OpenGL 3.0 driver
Storage15 GB free during install
Display1920 by 1080 or higher

Notes from the desk

Install the full component database even if the drive is tight. A partial database causes missing model errors that look like circuit faults.

Keep the application firewalled. Licence checks run at launch.
