SPSS is the statistics package that a very large share of published research in psychology, medicine, education, sociology and market research was actually run in. Its position comes from being usable by people whose speciality is the subject rather than statistics: the data sits in a spreadsheet style editor, the procedures are on menus with dialogs, and the output arrives as a formatted document with the tables already laid out for a paper.
The procedure set is broad. Descriptives and frequencies, cross tabulation with the full chi square family, t tests, one way and factorial analysis of variance with post hoc comparisons, correlation and partial correlation, linear and logistic regression, general and generalised linear models, mixed models, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, reliability, survival analysis with Kaplan Meier and Cox regression, and the non parametric equivalents of most of the above.
Data handling is more capable than its reputation suggests. Variable and value labels, measurement levels, missing value definitions, weighting, split file analysis, merging and aggregating datasets, restructuring between long and wide layouts, and a transformation language for computed variables and recodes. Importing works from spreadsheets, delimited text, database sources and the other common statistical formats, and the data editor keeps a clear separation between the data view and the variable definitions.
Everything a dialog does can also be written as syntax, and the dialogs will paste their syntax for you, which is how reproducible analysis gets done in this application. Syntax files run as batch jobs, and the output viewer holds tables, charts and logs in one navigable document that exports to word processing formats, PDF, spreadsheets and web output. The charting engine covers the standard statistical graphics plus a grammar based builder for anything custom.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Apply the interim fix after the base install, not before. Installing them in the wrong order leaves procedures that fail on launch.
Paste the syntax from every dialog into a syntax file as you work. It is the only practical way to reproduce an analysis later.
