MATLAB is a language built around the matrix and an environment built around trying things. You type an expression, you see the result, you plot it, you change one term and you look again. That loop is the whole point, and it is why the application ended up embedded in engineering, control, signal processing, finance, imaging and every research field that has to get a number out of some data before it can write a sentence about it.
The language itself handles arrays as first class objects, so operations that would be loops in most languages are single expressions here. Around it sits an editor with live scripts that interleave code, formatted text, equations and output in one document, a debugger, a profiler, an app builder for putting an interface on a piece of analysis, and a code generator that emits C, C++, CUDA or HDL from functions you wrote in the language.
This image is the full product rather than the base install. Every toolbox is included, which in practice means Signal Processing, Image Processing, Control System, Statistics and Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Optimization, Symbolic Math, Parallel Computing, Curve Fitting, System Identification, Computer Vision, Robotics, Instrument Control, Data Acquisition and the rest of the catalogue. Simulink is bundled with Stateflow and the standard block libraries for control, power systems, communications and physical modelling.
The installer is a long one and the image is large, which is a consequence of shipping everything rather than a download that fetches parts later. Nothing is retrieved during setup and nothing needs a connection afterwards.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Install to the default path. Several toolboxes write absolute paths during setup and moving the folder afterwards breaks them.
Block the executable in your firewall. The licensing check runs at launch and is the only thing that reaches out.
