The desktop client with the full chat, call and media workflow on a proper keyboard, running independently of whether the phone is switched on.
The desktop client is a native application rather than a web page in a frame, and the difference shows in how it behaves. It starts quickly, it uses a sensible amount of memory, notifications go through the operating system properly, and the whole thing keeps working when the phone is off, out of battery or on the other side of the country. Linking is a one time step and then the device stands on its own.
For anyone who does a meaningful amount of messaging, typing on a real keyboard is the entire justification. Beyond that the desktop specific behaviour adds up: drag a file from a folder straight into a conversation, paste a screenshot directly from the clipboard, use keyboard shortcuts for search, reply and navigation, and keep several conversations open across a large screen rather than scrolling one at a time on a phone.
Everything the mobile application does is here. Group conversations with mentions, replies, reactions and pinned messages. Voice notes recorded from the desktop microphone. Voice and video calling including group calls, with proper echo cancellation on a laptop. Document, image and video sending with preview. Disappearing messages, message editing within the window, starred messages and archived chats, all syncing across every linked device.
The security model is unchanged from the phone. End to end encryption applies to messages and calls on the desktop exactly as it does on mobile, keys never leave the linked devices, and the linked device list is visible so anything you do not recognise can be removed immediately. There is no account creation step here at all, since the client attaches to an existing phone number through a linking code shown on screen.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
