About this release

TeamViewer connects two machines and gives one of them control of the other. The reason it became the default rather than one of the many alternatives is that it works through the network arrangements that break everything else. No port forwarding, no static address, no router configuration, no virtual private network to set up first. Both ends run the application, one enters the other's identifier, and the session opens.

For support work the session tools are what matter. Full control of the remote desktop with correct handling of multiple monitors, clipboard shared in both directions, file transfer through a two pane browser or straight drag and drop into the session window, a shared whiteboard for pointing at things, remote reboot with automatic reconnection including into safe mode, and session recording to a file for documentation or training.

Unattended access covers the machines you look after rather than the ones you are asked to look at. A machine configured for unattended access can be reached without anyone sitting in front of it, organised into groups with notes and connection history attached, monitored for whether it is online, and reached through a wake on local network signal if it is asleep. Access can be scoped so a given account only reaches a given group.

It also handles the things around the session. Remote printing sends a document on the remote machine to a printer beside you. Session handover passes an active connection to a colleague without dropping it. Meeting mode runs screen sharing with audio and video for several participants. Every connection is encrypted end to end and can require a per machine password, a one time code, or an approval prompt on the remote side.

What you get

  • Connections that work through routers and firewalls without port forwarding or address configuration
  • Full remote desktop control with correct multi monitor detection and switching
  • File transfer through a two pane browser or by dragging straight into the session window
  • Unattended access with grouped machines, connection notes and online state monitoring
  • Remote reboot with automatic reconnection, including reconnection into safe mode
  • Session recording to a file with playback and export for documentation
  • Remote printing to a printer attached to the local machine
  • Session handover to another operator without dropping the connection
  • Meeting mode with screen sharing, audio and video for multiple participants
  • End to end encrypted sessions with per machine passwords or approval prompts

Changes in this build

  • Session start time reduced noticeably on connections between distant networks
  • Multi monitor handling reworked with per monitor scaling on mixed density setups
  • File transfer resumes after an interruption instead of restarting the queue
  • Recording format changed for smaller files at the same visual quality
  • Fixed a case where the connection would drop after a remote display driver change

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Uninstall any earlier TeamViewer build and clear its data folder from your user profile.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and choose the unattended access option if you want it.
  4. Set a strong per machine password when the installer asks, not afterwards.
  5. Close the installer rather than launching from it.
  6. Copy the contents of the unlock folder into the installation directory, overwriting when asked.
  7. Start the application and note the identifier it generates before you connect anything to it.

Notes from the desk

If you enable unattended access, set a long password. That setting turns the machine into something anyone with the identifier and the password can reach.

Keep the automatic updater switched off. An update replaces the licensed components.
