Telegram Desktop is the full desktop client rather than a wrapper around the web version. It runs natively, starts quickly, uses very little memory for what it holds, and keeps a complete synchronised history that is available the moment you sign in on a new machine. Everything you have sent or received is there, searchable, without a separate archive step.
File transfer is the practical reason a lot of people use it. Individual files go up to two gigabytes on a standard account and considerably more on a premium one, with no format restriction and no recompression, which means an archive, a project file or a raw video arrives exactly as it left. Transfers resume after an interruption, and everything sent stays retrievable from the cloud afterwards rather than expiring.
Groups and channels scale in a way most messengers do not. A group holds up to two hundred thousand members with granular permissions, slow mode, topic threads, pinned messages, admin logs and anti spam controls. Channels broadcast to an unlimited audience with post scheduling, silent delivery, view counts, reactions and comment threads attached to individual posts. The bot interface underneath all of it makes automation straightforward.
On the desktop specifically you get sensible things the mobile client cannot offer: multiple accounts open in one window with unread counts per account, a proper keyboard driven interface, drag and drop for files and folders, an integrated media viewer, chat folders with custom filters, message drafts synchronised between devices, and per chat notification rules. Secret chats with end to end encryption and self destruct timers are available for anything that should not sit in the cloud.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Set a cache size limit in the advanced settings. Left unbounded the media cache will grow to tens of gigabytes on an active account.
The portable build in the archive keeps its data beside the executable, which is useful on a stick but means anyone with the folder has the session.
