About this release

VueScan exists because scanner manufacturers stop writing drivers long before the hardware stops working. It carries its own driver set for several thousand flatbeds, document feeders and film scanners, which means a perfectly good machine from three operating system versions ago goes on working on a current install without the vendor software that was never updated for it.

For flat documents and photographs it does the ordinary things well. Preview, crop, deskew, descreen for printed originals, dust removal, multi page batching into a single PDF, automatic document feeder handling with duplex and blank page skipping, and OCR that writes a searchable text layer into the output file rather than producing a separate text document you then have to reunite with the scan.

The film side is where the Professional level earns its place. Negative and slide scanning with per emulsion colour profiles for a very long list of stock, infrared cleaning on hardware that supports it, multi exposure and multi pass scanning to pull detail out of dense shadow areas, and raw scan files that store the untouched sensor data so you can redevelop a scan years later without putting the original back on the glass.

Output is deliberately flexible. TIFF at eight or sixteen bits per channel, JPEG at any quality, PNG, and PDF with single or multi page output. Colour management through ICC profiles with calibration against a target, batch file naming with counters and relative timestamps, and scripting hooks for anything you need to run after a batch finishes.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
2. Uninstall the manufacturer scanning software first if it grabs the device exclusively.
3. Run the installer and let it complete.
4. Close the installer rather than launching from it.
5. Copy the contents of the unlock folder into the installation directory, overwriting when asked.
6. Start the application, plug the scanner in, and let it identify the device on first run.
