About this release

UltraISO is a small tool that does one thing better than most of the alternatives: it edits disc images in place. Open an image, add files, delete files, rename them, drag a folder in from the desktop, and save. There is no extract to a temporary folder and rebuild step, which on a five gigabyte image is the difference between a few seconds and several minutes of waiting on the disk.

Format handling is broad. It reads and converts between the standard image format and the proprietary ones produced by the various burning suites, so an image made in one application opens in another without a conversion tool in between. It preserves the boot information when converting, which is the part that most naive converters lose and the reason a converted installer image sometimes will not boot.

Writing bootable media is the most common use. Point it at an operating system image and a USB stick, choose the write method, and it produces media that starts on both legacy and modern firmware. It can also make a bootable image from scratch by supplying a boot sector file, extract the boot sector from an existing image for reuse, and write an image directly to optical media where the machine still has a drive.

The remaining features fill out the toolkit around images. A virtual drive that mounts an image as a lettered device so software installs from it without physical media. Creation of an image from a folder, from a physical disc or from a mounted device, with configurable file system standards and the long file name handling that older standards would otherwise mangle. Compression to the tool's own compact format for archive storage, integrity checking, and a hex view of the image structure for anyone who needs to look at what is actually in the sectors.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
2. Run the installer as administrator.
3. Allow the virtual drive component when prompted. Declining it removes the mounting feature.
4. Close the installer rather than launching from it.
5. Start the application from the Start menu and confirm the virtual drive letter appears in the file manager.
6. Associate image file types during setup only if you want images to open here by default.
