About this release

Topaz shipped separate applications for noise, sharpening and enlargement for years, and the awkward part was always knowing which to run and in what order. Photo AI is the answer to that. It looks at the image, works out what is actually wrong with it, and applies the appropriate corrections in the correct sequence with sensible strengths already set. For most images you open it, look at the preview, and save.

What it detects covers the four problems that account for nearly every unusable photograph. Sensor noise at high sensitivity, which it removes while keeping the fine detail that a conventional denoiser smears away. Softness, whether from a missed focus, camera shake or lens performance, which it sharpens with a model chosen for the specific cause. Insufficient resolution, which it enlarges with detail reconstruction rather than interpolation. And faces too small to hold their features, which get a dedicated recovery pass for eyes, teeth and hair.

The autopilot is a starting point rather than a verdict. Every module it enabled can be adjusted, disabled or replaced with a different model, the strengths are all on sliders, and the whole thing can be applied selectively through a subject or background mask so a portrait's face is treated differently from the scene behind it. The preview shows the original and the result at the same zoom with a split or wipe, at actual pixels, which is the only way to judge this class of processing honestly.

It works as a standalone application and as a plugin inside the usual photo editors, so it fits into an existing workflow at whatever point suits. Raw files are handled directly, which matters because doing this work before demosaicing produces better results than doing it afterwards. Batch processing runs a folder through the same autopilot or a fixed setting, with output format, bit depth, colour space and naming controlled per job.

What you get

  • Automatic detection of noise, softness, low resolution and small faces with corrections applied in the right order
  • Noise reduction that preserves fine detail rather than smoothing it away
  • Sharpening models chosen for the specific cause, whether motion, focus or lens softness
  • Detail reconstruction for enlargement rather than interpolation
  • Dedicated face recovery pass for eyes, teeth and hair on small subjects
  • Every autopilot decision adjustable, replaceable or removable afterwards
  • Subject and background masking so a portrait and its scene can be treated differently
  • Direct raw file support so processing happens before demosaicing
  • Split and wipe preview against the original at actual pixel zoom
  • Standalone application plus plugin integration with the common photo editors

Changes in this build

  • New sharpening model with much better results on motion blurred subjects
  • Face recovery less inclined toward an over smoothed look on larger faces
  • Autopilot better at leaving already clean images alone instead of over processing them
  • Batch processing faster on current generation graphics hardware
  • Fixed a colour shift when writing sixteen bit output in a wide gamut space

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Disconnect from the network before running the installer.
  3. Pause real time protection.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and let it complete.
  5. Do not launch the application from the installer.
  6. Copy the contents of the included folder into the installation directory, then start it and block it in your firewall.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD 64 bit with AVX2
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large raw files and batches
Graphics4 GB VRAM recommended, 8 GB for large enlargements
Storage8 GB free plus room for output
Display1920 by 1080, calibrated if colour accuracy matters

Notes from the desk

The models are bundled in the archive. If it offers to download them on first launch, cancel and point it at the included model folder in preferences.

Judge the result at actual pixels rather than fit to window. This class of processing looks flawless when it is scaled down and never when it is not.
