Lightroom Classic is the desktop, catalogue based version, and the distinction matters. Your files stay on your own drives in your own folder structure. The catalogue is a database that points at them and stores every edit as a set of instructions, so the original file is never touched and any version of any edit can be recovered at any point.
For anyone who shoots events, weddings, real estate, product or press, the import and cull workflow is the entire reason to use it. Import with presets applied on the way in, flag and reject at full screen speed, filter to the picks, and only then start developing. Sync a develop setting across four hundred frames in one keystroke.
The Develop module is a complete raw processor. Exposure, contrast, highlight and shadow recovery, whites and blacks, texture, clarity, dehaze, tone curve, HSL, colour grading with separate shadow, midtone and highlight wheels, detail and noise reduction, lens corrections, transform, and effects. AI masking picks out subject, sky, background, skin, eyes, hair, clothing and individual people automatically, and each mask carries the full slider set.
Output is handled in dedicated modules rather than as an afterthought. Print layouts with soft proofing, web galleries, slideshows, and an export engine with presets for size, sharpening, colour space, watermark and file naming, plus post export actions.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Keep the catalogue on an internal SSD. Running it from a network drive is unsupported and will corrupt it eventually.
Back up the catalogue on the schedule it offers. Previews can be rebuilt, a catalogue cannot.
