About this release

Every traditional enlargement method has the same problem: there is no more information in the file than there was before, so making it bigger makes it softer. Gigapixel takes a different approach and reconstructs plausible detail from what a model learned about how real images look. Fabric gets weave, brick gets texture, hair gets strands, and an edge that was four soft pixels becomes a clean line. The result is not the original detail, but at normal viewing it reads as a sharp photograph rather than a stretched one.

The reason it works across such different material is that it is not one model. There are separate models for standard photographic content, for compressed images pulled off the web, for very low resolution source, for scanned film and print, for computer generated art and illustration, and a dedicated face recovery pass that rebuilds eyes, teeth and hair on portraits that were too small to hold them. The application suggests one on import and you can switch and compare in the split view before committing.

Control sits above the model rather than inside it. You set the output by scale factor or by target dimensions, and there are sliders for detail recovery, sharpening, noise suppression, compression artefact removal and face strength, each with a live preview on a region you choose. Everything is comparable side by side or with a wipe against the untouched original at the same zoom, which is the only honest way to judge whether a setting helped.

The batch side is what makes it a production tool rather than a toy. Point it at a folder, apply one set of settings or let it pick per image, choose the output format, bit depth, colour space and naming pattern, and leave it. It processes on the graphics card with a processor fallback, and it will happily work through a few thousand images overnight.

What you get

  • Multiple reconstruction models for photographic, compressed, very low resolution and scanned source
  • Dedicated model for computer generated art and illustration that avoids photographic texturing
  • Face recovery pass that rebuilds eyes, teeth and hair on small portrait subjects
  • Output by scale factor up to six times or by exact target dimensions
  • Sliders for detail, sharpening, noise suppression, artefact removal and face strength
  • Split and wipe comparison against the untouched original at any zoom level
  • Batch processing across folders with per image model selection
  • Output control over format, bit depth, colour space, quality and file naming
  • Graphics card acceleration with an automatic processor fallback
  • Standalone application plus plugin integration for the common photo editors

Changes in this build

  • New reconstruction model with visibly better results on textiles and foliage
  • Face recovery less prone to producing an over smoothed plastic look
  • Processing considerably faster on current generation graphics hardware
  • Batch queue can now mix models across a single folder run
  • Fixed a colour shift when writing sixteen bit output in a wide gamut space

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Disconnect from the network before running the installer.
  3. Pause real time protection.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and let it complete.
  5. Do not launch the application from the installer.
  6. Copy the contents of the included folder into the installation directory, overwrite when asked, then start it and block it in your firewall.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD 64 bit with AVX2
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large batches
Graphics4 GB VRAM strongly recommended, 8 GB for very large enlargements
Storage6 GB free plus room for output
Display1920 by 1080

Notes from the desk

The models are included in the archive. If the application offers to download them on first launch, cancel that and point it at the bundled model folder in preferences.

Very large enlargements are limited by graphics memory rather than by system memory. If a job fails, drop the scale factor and run it twice.
