Data recovery software exists for the moment after the mistake. A volume was formatted, a partition table was rewritten, a folder went into the recycle bin and then out of it, or a drive that worked yesterday now shows up as unallocated space. This scans the media at a level below the file system and rebuilds what is still physically there.
There are two scan modes and the difference matters. The quick scan reads the file system records for entries marked as deleted but not yet overwritten, which is fast and preserves the original names and folder structure. The deep scan ignores the file system entirely and walks the raw sectors looking for file signatures, which finds data on a formatted or corrupted volume but returns files with generated names sorted by type. Most jobs start with the first and fall back to the second.

Documents, images, video and audio can be opened inside the scan results before you commit to writing anything, so you can confirm a file is intact rather than recovering forty gigabytes and finding out afterwards. Scan sessions can be saved and reopened later, and a whole drive can be imaged to a file first so all further work happens on a copy rather than on failing hardware.
