About this release

When a file is deleted, a partition is formatted or a drive stops mounting, the data is usually still sitting on the disk. What has gone is the entry in the file system that says where it starts and how long it is. Recovery software rebuilds that information, either by reading whatever remains of the file system structures or by scanning the raw surface for the signatures that mark the beginning of a known file type.

This tool does both, in that order. The quick scan reads the existing structures and comes back in under a minute with everything that is still referenced, including deleted entries and file names. The deep scan then goes through the raw sectors matching signatures for hundreds of formats, which takes hours on a large drive but finds material after a format, a partition table loss or a file system corruption where nothing structural remains. Results from both passes appear in one tree, and you can start recovering from the quick results while the deep scan is still running.

Preview before recovery is the feature that makes it usable rather than a lottery. Photos, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets and archives can be opened in the panel to confirm the file is intact before you commit to writing it out. Filtering by type, size, modification period and file name narrows a scan that returned two hundred thousand results down to the twenty you were looking for. Scan sessions save to a file, so a long deep scan can be paused, closed and resumed later without repeating it.

The bootable environment is what separates this from a simple undelete utility. It writes a self contained recovery system to a USB stick, boots the failed machine into it, and runs the same scanner against the internal disk without Windows ever loading. That covers the case where the operating system will not start, and it avoids the worst mistake in data recovery, which is writing to the damaged drive while trying to read it.

What you get

  • Quick scan reading existing file system structures including deleted entries with names intact
  • Deep scan matching raw sector signatures across hundreds of file formats
  • Both passes merged into one result tree with recovery available while the deep scan continues
  • Preview of photos, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets and archives before recovery
  • Filtering by file type, size, modification period, path and name
  • Scan sessions saved to a file so a long deep scan can be paused and resumed
  • Recovery from deleted, formatted, corrupted, RAW and inaccessible volumes
  • Support for internal disks, external drives, memory cards, USB sticks and virtual disk files
  • Bootable environment written to a USB stick for machines that will not start
  • Repair pass for damaged video and photo files that recover incomplete

Changes in this build

  • Deep scan considerably faster on large drives with a rewritten signature matcher
  • Additional file signatures added, including several current camera raw formats
  • Video repair improved on files that lost their index rather than their content
  • Bootable media builder updated for current UEFI firmware and NVMe controllers
  • Preview panel handles large raw files without loading the whole frame first

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Install this on a different drive from the one you are recovering. Never install onto the damaged volume.
  2. Extract the archive to a local folder on a healthy drive.
  3. Disconnect from the network and pause real time protection.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and choose a destination on the healthy drive.
  5. Copy the contents of the included folder into the installation directory before launching.
  6. For a machine that will not boot, use the media builder to write the recovery environment to a USB stick from a working computer.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, 1.5 GHz or faster
Memory2 GB minimum, 8 GB for deep scans of very large drives
GraphicsAny adapter
Storage2 GB for the install plus free space equal to what you intend to recover
Display1024 by 768 minimum

Notes from the desk

Recover to a different physical drive than the one you are scanning. Writing recovered files back onto the damaged volume overwrites the material you have not recovered yet.

If the drive is making noise or disappearing from the system intermittently, stop and image it first. Every additional scan of failing hardware reduces what can be read.
