About this release

The disk management console built into Windows can create, delete and format a partition, and beyond that it says no to almost everything. It will not move a partition, it will not resize one when the free space is in the wrong place, it will not merge two, and it will not convert a disk between partition table styles without wiping it. Partition Master does all of those, without destroying what is on them.

The working model is a queue rather than a series of immediate actions. You set up everything you want, resize this, move that, merge those two, and it all sits pending until you press apply. Then it works out the correct order, decides which operations need to run before Windows loads, reboots into its own environment for those, and comes back. Nothing happens piecemeal, and a mistake made while planning is one click to undo.

Migration is the other half of what people install it for. Move an entire Windows installation from a mechanical drive to a solid state one, from a smaller drive to a larger one, or from a larger drive to a smaller one provided the used space fits. The boot configuration is rewritten for the new disk, the alignment is corrected for solid state hardware, and the partition table style is converted if the target firmware needs a different one. The machine boots off the new drive with everything where it was.

The bootable environment on a USB stick covers the cases where Windows will not start, or where the operation touches the system partition so heavily that it cannot be done from inside a running system. The same interface runs there. Around it sits the rest of the toolbox: cloning at file level or sector level, converting between the two partition table styles and between basic and dynamic disks without data loss, surface scanning for bad sectors, secure wiping with selectable passes, and a partition recovery scan for tables that were lost rather than repartitioned.

What you get

  • Resize, move, merge, split, create and delete partitions without losing what is on them
  • Queued operations applied together, with reboot handled automatically for anything locked
  • System migration to a new drive with the boot configuration rewritten for the target
  • Disk cloning at file level or full sector level for identical copies
  • Conversion between partition table styles and between basic and dynamic disks without data loss
  • Alignment correction for solid state drives during migration or resize
  • Bootable environment on a USB stick running the same interface for machines that will not start
  • Surface scan for bad sectors with a report per region
  • Secure wipe with selectable pass count for a drive or a single partition
  • Partition recovery scan for tables that were lost rather than deliberately repartitioned

Changes in this build

  • Migration engine faster and more reliable on drives with a separate recovery partition
  • Bootable media builder updated for current UEFI firmware and NVMe controllers
  • Resize operations on very large volumes complete significantly quicker
  • Conversion between partition table styles improved on disks with more than four primary partitions
  • Fixed a case where a queued operation could be reordered incorrectly after an undo

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Back up anything on the disks you intend to touch before you install. This category of tool has no undo once applied.
  2. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  3. Disconnect from the network and pause real time protection.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and let it complete.
  5. Copy the contents of the included folder into the installation directory before launching.
  6. Build the bootable USB stick from the media builder now rather than when you need it.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, 500 MHz or faster
Memory1 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended
GraphicsAny adapter
Storage1.5 GB free plus a USB stick for the bootable environment
Display1024 by 768 minimum

Notes from the desk

Take a backup first. Every operation here is applied to the actual partition table, and a power cut halfway through a move is unrecoverable.

Suspend any drive encryption before you resize or move an encrypted volume. Resuming afterwards is fine, doing it while active is not.
