About this release

StartAllBack undoes the parts of the Windows 11 interface that people find slower to use than what came before. The Start menu returns to a list with all programs visible, sorted and searchable, instead of a pinned grid with a recommendations block underneath it. The taskbar can be moved to any edge again, made smaller, ungrouped, and given text labels so you can read which window is which without hovering over identical rectangles.

The context menu change is the one most people install it for. Right clicking a file in Windows 11 shows a short menu and hides everything else behind an extra click, which removes every entry that installed applications add. This restores the full menu immediately, so archive tools, editors, version control shells and everything else are back where they were with no second step.

File Explorer gets a set of fixes too. The ribbon or the command bar, whichever you prefer, proper details pane behaviour, the classic navigation pane with expandable trees, and the dark mode inconsistencies patched so dialogs stop flashing white. Icons for drives, folders and libraries can be swapped for the older sets if you want the visual language to match.

It is deliberately a light program. It hooks the shell rather than replacing it, uses very little memory, does not add a background service that runs constantly, and it can be switched off from its own settings panel without uninstalling if you want to compare. Every change is individually toggleable, so you can take only the context menu fix and leave the Start menu alone if that is all you want.

What you get

  • Classic Start menu with all programs listed, sorted and directly searchable
  • Full right click context menus restored with no extra click to see the rest
  • Taskbar moveable to any screen edge with size, grouping and label controls
  • Text labels on taskbar buttons so windows are readable at a glance
  • File Explorer with the classic ribbon or command bar and a proper navigation tree
  • Dark mode inconsistencies patched across dialogs and property sheets
  • Icon pack swapping for drives, folders and system locations
  • Every change individually toggleable from one settings panel
  • No permanent background service and a very small memory footprint
  • Master switch to disable everything temporarily without uninstalling

Changes in this build

  • Compatibility restored with the newest Windows 11 feature update
  • Taskbar label rendering fixed on mixed scaling multi monitor setups
  • Start menu search results faster on machines with very large program lists
  • Additional icon pack support and better handling of custom folder icons
  • Fixed a case where explorer would restart repeatedly after a cumulative update

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Close every File Explorer window before you start.
  3. Run the installer and choose whether to install for this user or for everyone.
  4. The taskbar and explorer will restart during the install. This is expected.
  5. Run the included licensing helper as administrator from the same folder.
  6. Open the settings panel from the Start menu and turn on only the changes you want.

Notes from the desk

A Windows feature update can temporarily break the shell hook. Reinstall over the top after a major update rather than uninstalling first.

If explorer starts looping on boot, hold shift during startup and use the master switch to disable everything, then reinstall.
