MathWorks MATLAB R2025b
The numerical computing environment and its language, bundled with the full toolbox set and Simulink so nothing is missing when a model asks for a block you do not have.
Structural analysis and design across steel, concrete, timber, aluminium and cold formed sections, with the international design codes and the full solver set included.
STAAD.Pro is a structural analysis and design application that has been in continuous use on real projects for a very long time, which matters more than any feature list. Buildings, towers, bridges, culverts, plant structures, pipe racks, tanks, foundations and offshore platforms all get modelled, analysed and code checked in it, and the results are accepted by reviewing engineers because the solver behaviour is well understood and thoroughly documented.
The modelling side takes geometry in several ways. You can draw it in the graphical environment, generate it from parametric structure wizards for frames, trusses, cylinders and surfaces, type it in the command language directly, or import from a CAD or building information model. The command language is worth learning: a whole structure, its loading and its design parameters can live in one readable text file that diffs cleanly and can be generated by a script when you are running variations.
Analysis covers the range most projects need. Linear static, P delta and full nonlinear, buckling, dynamic response with eigen extraction, response spectrum, time history, pushover, cable and tension only members, compression only supports, soil springs, staged construction and moving load generation for bridge work. Load combinations can be generated automatically from the selected code rather than assembled by hand, and the solver reports mass participation and convergence clearly enough to see when a model is misbehaving.
Design is where the code libraries earn their place. Steel, concrete, timber, aluminium and cold formed steel design run against the American, European, British, Indian, Canadian, Australian, Japanese and a long list of other national codes, with member selection and optimisation available rather than only checking. Output comes out as a structured report with the calculation trail visible, which is what a checker will ask for.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, 64 bit, four cores or more, high clock speed helps the solver |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for large dynamic models |
| Graphics | 2 GB VRAM with an OpenGL capable driver |
| Storage | 25 GB free during install, 14 GB after |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 minimum |
Keep your model files outside the installation directory. Reinstalling or repairing the application will clear that folder.
Run a small known model first and check the results against a hand calculation before you trust a fresh install on real work.
