Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
The high end integrated design, simulation and manufacturing package used on aerospace, automotive and heavy machinery programmes.
NX sits at the top end of the CAD market alongside CATIA and Creo, and it is used where the part count is enormous and the tolerance stack matters. Aircraft structures, engines, vehicle bodies, production machinery and the tooling that makes all of it. What separates it from mid range modellers is not any single tool but the fact that design, simulation and machining live in one data model, so a change in the part propagates through the analysis and the toolpath without an export step.
Modelling is synchronous, which is the practical headline. You can work with a full parametric history when you want the design intent captured, and you can also grab a face on an imported dumb solid with no history at all and move it, and the surrounding geometry updates sensibly. That combination is why NX handles supplier data so well. Freeform surfacing is genuinely class leading, with continuity control good enough for exterior automotive surfaces, and the assembly environment handles very large structures with positional and arrangement control.
Simulation covers structural, thermal, flow and motion under a pre and post environment that reads the design geometry directly rather than a translated copy. Meshing is associative, so a geometry change re meshes rather than starting over. Manufacturing covers two through five axis milling, turning, mill turn, wire EDM, robotic paths and additive, with a machine tool simulation that runs the real post processed code against a kinematic model of the machine before anything is cut.
The drafting side is complete: model based definition with product manufacturing information carried on the solid, plus conventional drawings when a supplier needs them. Data flows out through every industry format you would expect, and the translators are the good ones rather than an afterthought. This is a large install and a serious application, and the write up here assumes you already know why you want it.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, 64 bit, 8 cores or more recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 32 GB minimum, 64 GB or more for large assemblies and simulation |
| Graphics | Certified workstation GPU with 8 GB VRAM strongly recommended |
| Storage | 60 GB free during install, SSD required for reasonable load times |
| Display | 2560 by 1440 or higher, two displays if you are running simulation alongside modelling |
Consumer gaming cards run NX but the viewport behaves oddly on large assemblies. A certified workstation card removes most of the odd behaviour.
Install the licensing service before the application. Doing it in the other order means an uninstall and a second attempt.
