A fast vector and raster design application with live non destructive effects, a real pixel workspace beside the vector one and no subscription attached to it.
Affinity Designer is a vector illustration application that also has a genuine pixel workspace built into the same document. You switch personas with a click: draw the shapes as vectors, then move to the pixel persona and paint texture directly onto the same artwork with real brushes, then switch back and keep editing the curves. Nothing is exported between the two, and both live in one file.
The performance is the thing people notice first. Pan and zoom stay smooth at very high zoom levels on documents with thousands of objects, gradients render live, and the undo history is essentially unlimited and stored with the document, so you can reopen a file tomorrow and step back through yesterday's decisions. It is a much lighter application than the size of what it can handle suggests.
The drawing tools cover the full set. Pen and node editing with smart snapping, a pencil for freehand curves, boolean operations that stay live and re editable, corner tools applied per node, contour and expand stroke, pressure sensitive variable width strokes, a vector brush engine, and a shape library with parametric controls that stay adjustable. Symbols keep repeated elements in sync across a document, and constraints let a component resize sensibly inside a layout.
Effects and adjustments are non destructive throughout. Blurs, shadows, glows, bevels, gradient overlays and colour adjustments sit on a layer and remain editable, and they apply to vector objects, pixel layers or whole groups equally. Export covers artboards and slices to SVG, PDF, EPS, PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF and WebP with a persistent export panel that keeps output settings attached to each slice.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Hardware acceleration can be switched off in the performance settings if your driver produces rendering artefacts. The application is still fast without it.
Files saved in this version open in earlier ones only if you export rather than save. Keep that in mind before handing work on.
