Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
The general purpose NURBS modeller that will accept, repair and re-export almost any geometry format you put in front of it, with Grasshopper bundled for the parametric side.
Rhino is a free form surface modeller with no history tree and no imposed workflow, and that is exactly why it ends up on so many machines. Jewellery, marine hulls, footwear, furniture, product enclosures, architectural facades and stage geometry all get built here, largely because the underlying NURBS kernel does not care what discipline you came from. You draw curves, you build surfaces from those curves, you trim and join them into polysurfaces, and you export whatever the next person in the chain needs.
The tolerance model is the part experienced users care about. Rhino works to an explicit document tolerance and tells you when an operation could not meet it, rather than silently producing a surface with a gap in it. That honesty is what makes it a repair tool as much as a modelling tool. Files that arrive broken from a CAD package, a scanner or a client with no idea what they exported get opened here, checked for naked edges, stitched, and sent back out clean.
Grasshopper ships inside the application rather than as an add on. It is a visual programming canvas where components are wired together to drive geometry, so a facade panel pattern, a stair rail, a lattice or a whole parametric family becomes a definition you can change with sliders instead of a model you have to rebuild. Definitions written years ago still open, and the plugin ecosystem around it is enormous.
SubD sits alongside the NURBS side and gives you a proper box modelling workflow with creases, edge loops and smooth subdivision, and crucially it converts to NURBS surfaces when you are done. That combination lets you rough a shape out quickly by pushing and pulling, then hand the result to the precise side of the application for filleting, sectioning and drawing production. Rendering, layout sheets, dimensioning, blocks, worksessions and a scripting environment in Python round the package out.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, 64 bit, four cores or more recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for large assemblies |
| Graphics | OpenGL 4.1 capable adapter with 4 GB VRAM |
| Storage | 6 GB free |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Set your document tolerance before you start modelling. Changing it halfway through a project will not retroactively fix surfaces already built.
Grasshopper plugins install into the components folder in your user profile. Install them after the application, not before.
