About this release

Almost every desktop motherboard and a large share of laptops use a Realtek codec for audio, and Windows will install a generic driver for it that produces sound and nothing else. The manufacturer package is what turns that into a working audio system: the control panel, the jack configuration, the enhancement stack, the multichannel routing and the microphone processing all live here rather than in the operating system.

The jack handling alone is worth the install. Front panel detection that actually fires when something is plugged in, retasking so a line input can become a rear speaker output, per jack device assignment so headphones and speakers stay separate instead of fighting over the default, and the ability to keep two outputs alive at once rather than having the system mute one when the other appears.

The processing side covers a full parametric equaliser with saved profiles, room correction and virtual surround for headphones, loudness equalisation for material with wildly different levels, bass management with a crossover, and the microphone chain with noise suppression, acoustic echo cancellation and beam forming on array microphones. Sample rate and bit depth are set explicitly per device rather than negotiated behind your back.

The package installs on every current Windows version and covers the whole codec range in one file, so you do not need to identify the exact chip before downloading. It replaces both the generic system driver and any older manufacturer package cleanly, and it includes the service that keeps the control panel reachable after a feature update, which is the specific thing that tends to break on its own.

What you get

  • Full driver and control panel for the current and legacy Realtek codec range
  • Front and rear jack detection with per jack device assignment
  • Jack retasking so inputs and outputs can be reassigned to different roles
  • Multiple simultaneous outputs without the system muting one for the other
  • Parametric equaliser with saved profiles and per device settings
  • Room correction, virtual surround and loudness equalisation
  • Bass management with an adjustable crossover for multichannel setups
  • Microphone noise suppression, echo cancellation and array beam forming
  • Explicit sample rate and bit depth selection per device
  • One package covering the whole codec range across every current Windows version

Changes in this build

  • Support added for the newest codec revisions on current motherboards
  • Control panel reworked so it survives a Windows feature update
  • Reduced latency on the default output path
  • Fixed the front panel detection failure on several recent chassis designs
  • Microphone processing chain improved on array microphones in laptops

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Uninstall any existing Realtek package through the control panel and restart first.
  3. Disconnect from the network so Windows does not reinstall the generic driver mid install.
  4. Run the installer as administrator.
  5. Restart when it asks. It is not optional for audio drivers.
  6. Open the control panel from the system tray and set your jack assignments and sample rate.

System requirements

ProcessorAny processor supported by the host operating system
Memory2 GB minimum
GraphicsAny
Storage1 GB free during install
HardwareA Realtek high definition audio codec on the motherboard or in the laptop

Notes from the desk

Uninstall the old package and restart before installing this one. Layering audio drivers is how you end up with no sound at all.

If Windows replaces the driver after a feature update, run the installer again rather than trying to roll back through device manager.
