Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
A character authoring pipeline that builds rigged, skinned, morph driven humans and hands them off to game engines and DCC packages with the skeleton intact.
Character Creator exists because building a believable human from scratch is the slowest part of almost any 3D project. It starts from a topologically clean base mesh that already has a production skeleton, facial rig and clean UV layout, and everything you do after that is deformation and material work on top of a foundation that will not break when it animates. That single decision removes the entire retopology and rigging stage from the front of a project.
Shaping is done with morph sliders that run from broad proportion controls down to individual features. Head, face, eyes, nose, mouth, jaw, ears, neck, torso, limbs and hands each have their own slider groups, and the sliders can be pushed past their nominal range for stylised work. Morphs can be sculpted externally and brought back in, so a face developed in a sculpting application becomes a slider like any other. Body proportions carry through to clothing automatically because garments are fitted to the base and follow its deformation.
The material system is physically based with layered skin shading that handles subsurface scattering, micro normal detail, cavity darkening and dynamic wrinkles driven by the facial rig. Hair is handled as either card based or strand based assets with their own shader, and eyes have a separate multi layer setup with a real cornea and iris. Fabric, leather, metal and plastic materials for clothing all use the same physically based inputs, so a character looks consistent under whatever lighting the destination scene has.
Export is the point of the whole application, and the export paths are unusually careful. FBX out to the major game engines carries the skeleton, skin weights, blend shapes and materials with the naming those engines expect. Alembic gets you a baked cache for rendering. There is a live link path to real time engines that pushes changes across without a re-export, and a path back and forth to sculpting and animation applications so the character can keep moving between tools without losing its rig.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, quad core 3 GHz or faster |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for strand hair and heavy scenes |
| Graphics | 8 GB VRAM recommended, DirectX 12 capable |
| Storage | 40 GB free during install, SSD strongly recommended for the content library |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Keep the content library on a fast drive. It is read constantly and a slow disk makes the whole application feel broken.
Export at the base subdivision level for game engines. Exporting the subdivided mesh produces files that no engine wants to load.
