About this release

Proteus takes a circuit from an idea on a schematic through to a manufacturable board without changing application. You draw the schematic, simulate it to check it behaves, annotate and transfer the netlist to the layout editor, place and route the board, run the design rule check, and produce the manufacturing outputs. Everything stays linked, so a change on the schematic propagates forward rather than leaving you to remember it.

The simulation engine is the part that sets it apart from ordinary layout packages. It is a mixed mode simulator, so analogue and digital parts of the same circuit are solved together rather than in separate tools. You get virtual instruments on screen, an oscilloscope, logic analyser, signal generator, counter timer, spectrum analyser and protocol analysers for the common serial buses, all wired into the schematic exactly like real bench equipment would be.

Microcontroller co simulation is the feature people actually buy it for. Load your compiled firmware into a simulated part and it executes cycle by cycle inside the circuit, driving the simulated peripherals around it. You can single step the code, set breakpoints, watch registers and variables, and see the effect on a simulated display, motor or sensor at the same time. That means a large amount of embedded debugging happens before any hardware exists.

The PCB side is a full layout package. Multi layer boards with controlled trace widths, differential pairs, copper pour with thermal relief, length matching, interactive routing with push and shove, an autorouter for the tedious sections, full design rule checking, a 3D viewer that shows the assembled board with component models, and output of gerbers, drill files, pick and place data and a bill of materials.

What you get

  • Schematic capture with hierarchical sheets, buses and a large component library
  • Mixed mode analogue and digital simulation solved in a single engine
  • Virtual instruments including oscilloscope, logic analyser, signal generator and spectrum analyser
  • Protocol analysers for the common serial buses with decoded traffic display
  • Microcontroller co simulation running compiled firmware inside the circuit
  • Source level debugging with breakpoints, single stepping and variable watches
  • Multi layer PCB layout with interactive push and shove routing and copper pour
  • Design rule checking, length matching and differential pair support
  • 3D board viewer with component models for mechanical fit checking
  • Manufacturing output including gerbers, drill files, pick and place data and bills of materials

Changes in this build

  • Simulation engine faster on circuits with large digital sections
  • Additional microcontroller families supported for co simulation
  • Router improved on dense boards with many differential pairs
  • 3D viewer rendering quality and model coverage both increased
  • Fixed a case where annotation changes could fail to propagate to an already routed board

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder with five gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network before you begin.
  3. Pause real time protection for the length of the install.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and accept the default component set.
  5. Close the installer without launching the application.
  6. Run the included licensing helper as administrator, then start Proteus from the Start menu.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, quad core recommended for simulation
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large mixed mode circuits
Graphics2 GB VRAM for the 3D board viewer
Storage5 GB free
Display1920 by 1080 or higher, a second monitor helps a great deal

Notes from the desk

Component libraries from an earlier major version import but should be checked before you trust a footprint to manufacture.

Keep the application blocked in your firewall. The library update service will try to check the licence state.
