About this release

Windows will mount a plain ISO and that is the extent of what it does. PowerISO handles everything else, which turns out to matter more often than you would expect. It opens BIN, CUE, NRG, MDF, MDS, IMG, DAA, CDI, UIF and a long list of others, converts between them, and mounts any of them on one of up to twenty three virtual drives that behave exactly like physical hardware to any application asking.

Editing an image in place is the feature that separates it from the free tools. You open an existing image, add files, remove files, rename, create folders, and save, without extracting the whole thing to disk and rebuilding it. For a large installation image where one file needs replacing, that is the difference between a two minute job and a forty minute one.

Making bootable media is handled properly. It writes bootable USB drives from an image with the boot record configured for either BIOS or UEFI, it creates bootable images from a folder structure, it extracts the boot sector from existing media, and it will split an oversized image across multiple volumes when the target file system cannot hold it. The USB writing path handles the newer images with a single large install file that trip up simpler tools.

The disc side remains complete for anyone who still has an optical drive. Burning data, audio and video discs, copying disc to disc or disc to image, erasing rewritable media, ripping audio to a file with tagging, verifying a burn against the source, and creating an image from a physical disc sector by sector. Shell integration puts the common actions on the right click menu so most jobs never open the main window at all.

What you get

  • Opens BIN, CUE, NRG, MDF, MDS, IMG, DAA, CDI, UIF and most other image formats
  • Mounts any supported format on up to twenty three virtual drives
  • In place image editing with add, delete, rename and folder creation without a rebuild
  • Conversion between every supported image format in both directions
  • Bootable USB writing with the boot record configured for BIOS or UEFI
  • Bootable image creation from a folder structure with boot sector extraction
  • Image splitting across volumes when the target file system cannot hold the whole file
  • Disc burning for data, audio and video plus disc to disc and disc to image copying
  • Audio ripping to file with tagging, and burn verification against the source
  • Shell integration putting mount, extract and burn on the right click menu

Changes in this build

  • USB writing path updated for the newer images carrying a single oversized install file
  • Faster image creation and extraction on large source sets
  • Virtual drive component rebuilt for the current driver signing requirements
  • Additional image format support added on the read side
  • Fixed a case where an edited image could lose its boot record on save

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Uninstall any earlier version first so the virtual drive component installs cleanly.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and accept the driver installation prompt.
  4. Do not launch the application from the installer.
  5. Copy the licensing files from the included folder into the installation directory.
  6. Reboot so the virtual drive component loads, then start the application.

Notes from the desk

The virtual drive needs a reboot before it appears. If the drives are missing, that is almost always why.

When writing a bootable USB, check whether the target machine boots in BIOS or UEFI mode first. Writing the wrong boot record produces a stick that is simply ignored.
