MathWorks MATLAB R2025b
The numerical computing environment and its language, bundled with the full toolbox set and Simulink so nothing is missing when a model asks for a block you do not have.
Technical graphing and data analysis with publication quality output, a very deep fitting and statistics toolset, and batch processing driven by templates rather than repeated clicking.
Origin is what a very large amount of laboratory and engineering work gets plotted in, and the reason is that the graphs come out looking like the ones in a journal rather than like a spreadsheet chart with the colours changed. Every element of every plot is controllable, from axis tick direction and minor gridline weight through to error bar cap width, and the whole appearance can be saved as a theme and applied to every other graph in the project in one operation.
The graph type list is enormous and covers the things general purpose tools do not have. Contour and heat maps, ternary and polar plots, box charts with data overlays, violin plots, waterfall and stacked offsets, 3D surfaces and scatter with projections, wind roses, Piper diagrams, Smith charts and a long tail of specialist plots for particular fields. Multi layer graphs let several plots share a page with linked or independent axes.
Analysis is the other half and it is deep. Linear, polynomial, nonlinear and multiple regression with user defined functions and shared parameters across datasets, peak analysis with baseline detection, deconvolution and integration, signal processing with filtering and transforms, statistics from descriptive through hypothesis testing to survival and multivariate analysis, and interpolation, smoothing and differentiation on any dataset.
What makes it worth learning is the recalculation model. Every analysis result stays linked to its source data, so replacing the input updates the fit, the report and every graph derived from it automatically. Combined with analysis templates and batch processing, a folder of a hundred measurement files can be processed into a hundred finished graphs and a summary table without repeating a single operation by hand.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
