About this release

Power Data Recovery is aimed at getting files back from every version of the situation where they are gone: deleted, emptied from the bin, lost to a format, lost to a partition that no longer appears, lost to a file system that reports itself as raw, or lost to a drive that Windows now offers to format for you. It reads the media directly and rebuilds what is still physically present on it.

The starting point is deliberately targeted rather than a blanket scan of everything. You can scan a specific logical drive, a specific folder, the desktop, the recycle bin, or a whole physical disk including its unallocated space. Scanning a folder rather than a volume takes minutes instead of hours and is usually enough for the ordinary case, which is a single directory somebody deleted an hour ago.

Results are organised so they can be worked through rather than only dumped in a list. Files are grouped by path where the structure survived, by type where it did not, and filtered by extension, size and modification age. A preview pane opens documents, images, video and audio inside the results so you can confirm a file is intact before recovering it, and the scan result can be exported and loaded again later without repeating the scan.

The Technician level covers the harder cases and the situations where you are working on somebody else's machine. Support for NTFS, exFAT, FAT, ReFS and the common Linux file systems, recovery from RAID volumes and dynamic disks, sector by sector imaging so all work happens on a copy of a failing drive, memory card and optical media handling, and a bootable environment on USB for a machine whose system drive is the problem.

What you get

  • Targeted scanning by folder, drive, desktop, recycle bin or whole physical disk
  • Recovery from deleted, formatted, raw and missing partitions
  • Support for NTFS, exFAT, FAT, ReFS and common Linux file systems
  • Results grouped by path where structure survives and by type where it does not
  • Filtering by extension, size and modification age across large result sets
  • Preview of documents, images, video and audio before committing to recovery
  • Exportable scan results that can be reloaded without rescanning
  • Sector by sector imaging so recovery runs against a copy of a failing drive
  • RAID and dynamic disk handling plus memory card and optical media support
  • Bootable USB environment for machines whose system drive will not start

Changes in this build

  • Scanning faster on large volumes with much better progress estimation
  • Additional file signatures added for recent document, raw and video formats
  • Preview pane handles a wider set of formats without an external codec
  • Bootable media builder updated for current firmware and storage drivers
  • Fixed a case where filtering a very large result set could drop entries from the list

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Install onto a drive other than the one you are recovering from, always.
  2. Extract the archive to that other volume.
  3. Run the installer and let it complete.
  4. Close the installer without launching the application.
  5. Run the included licensing helper as administrator from the same folder.
  6. Start the application and set the recovery destination to a separate physical drive before scanning.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit
Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB for full disk scans
GraphicsNot applicable
Storage500 MB for the install plus space equal to what you are recovering
Display1280 by 800 minimum

Notes from the desk

If the drive is making noises it did not make before, image it first and recover from the image. Every additional scan on failing hardware is a risk.

Never recover files back onto the volume you are recovering from. Doing so overwrites the data you have not recovered yet.
