About this release

Microsoft Toolkit has been in circulation long enough to have become the reference point for this whole category, and it is still around because it does more than press one button. It splits into two modules, one for Windows and one for Office, and each one gives you the licensing state, the tools to change it and a customisation section for managing the installation itself.

The information panel is genuinely useful independent of activation. It reports the installed edition, the licensing status, the installed key partial, the remaining period, the channel the product came from and the exact build. On a machine where something has gone wrong with licensing, that panel usually identifies the problem faster than working through the system's own reporting.

The activation section covers both the standard licensing path and the key based one, with the retail to volume conversion handled where a conversion route exists. A renewal task can be installed so the state maintains itself on an interval, or the whole thing can be run once and forgotten. Every operation writes to a log window you can read while it runs and save afterwards.

The customisation section is what separates it from the simpler tools. It manages the Office installation itself, adding and removing individual applications from an existing install without a reinstall, changing the channel, backing up and restoring the licensing state, and repairing an installation that has partially broken. Uninstall reverses everything the tool put in place and leaves the system as it was.

What you get

  • Separate modules for Windows and for the Office suites
  • Detailed information panel reporting edition, status, channel, build and remaining period
  • Activation across both the standard licensing path and the key based one
  • Retail to volume conversion where a conversion route exists
  • Optional renewal task with a configurable interval
  • Customisation section for adding and removing Office applications without a reinstall
  • Licensing state backup and restore before you change anything
  • Installation repair for partially broken Office installs
  • Live log window with saveable output for every operation
  • Complete uninstall that removes the task and reverses the changes

Changes in this build

  • Detection updated for the newest Windows and Office servicing builds
  • Customisation module extended with more granular application selection
  • Log window reorganised and made easier to read during a long operation
  • Several failures under restrictive group policy resolved
  • Backup and restore of licensing state made more reliable across major updates

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder. Do not run it from inside the archive viewer.
  2. Turn off real time protection for the length of the run. Every scanner flags this category.
  3. Add the folder to your exclusions if you intend to keep the tool.
  4. Right click the executable and run it as administrator.
  5. Back up the licensing state from the customisation tab before you change anything.
  6. Pick the module you need, read the information panel, then run the operation and check the log.

Notes from the desk

Take the licensing backup first. It is one click and it is the difference between a bad afternoon and a five second restore.

Do not run this alongside another tool of the same kind. Two of them leave a state that is awkward to unpick.
