Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
Garment creation through real sewing patterns and cloth simulation, producing clothing that drapes, folds and moves correctly on a character or a mannequin.
Marvelous Designer builds clothing the way clothing is actually built. You draw flat pattern pieces in a 2D window, define the seams that join them, arrange them around a body in the 3D window, and simulate. The cloth falls, gathers, tensions across the shoulders and breaks at the elbow because the geometry and the seam allowances say it should, not because someone sculpted a fold there.
That approach is why it ended up in film, games and animation pipelines rather than staying in the apparel industry it came from. Modelling believable clothing by hand is slow and rarely convincing. Here a shirt is a shirt: change the pattern width and it becomes looser, move a dart and the drape changes, add a pleat and it behaves like a pleat. Fabric properties for weight, stretch, bending stiffness, friction and thickness drive the simulation, with presets for cotton, denim, silk, leather, wool and knits.
The detailing tools cover the parts that sell a garment up close. Buttons and buttonholes that actually fasten and hold tension, zippers that open and close along a seam, elastic with adjustable tension, pleats, folds, top stitching, quilting, trims, and layered garments that collide with each other correctly rather than passing through. Pressure and shrinkage controls handle the tighter fits.
For production it fits into an existing pipeline rather than replacing one. Animated characters can be imported and the garment simulated against the motion with collision, wind and gravity, then cached out per frame. Export covers the common mesh and point cache formats with UV layouts taken directly from the flat pattern, which means the texture coordinates are already correct and laid out the way a texture artist expects.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 or better, high core count helps the solver |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for layered garments on animated characters |
| Graphics | 4 GB VRAM with an OpenGL 4 capable driver |
| Storage | 10 GB free plus space for simulation caches |
| Display | 1920 by 1080, two displays are a genuine advantage with the split workspace |
Simulate at a low particle distance while you fit the garment and only raise it for the final pass. High detail simulation on a rough fit wastes a great deal of time.
Cache simulations to a fast drive. Per frame caches on a long animation get very large.
