Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
Product rendering built for speed, with a real time raytraced viewport, drag and drop materials and lighting, and direct import from essentially every CAD format in use.
KeyShot exists to get a finished product image out of a CAD model with as little between the two as possible. Import the model, drag a material onto a part, drag an environment onto the scene, and you are looking at a lit, raytraced result immediately. There is no render setup, no sampling configuration and no waiting to see whether the lighting works, because the viewport is the render and it refines continuously while you work.
Import is deliberately broad, because the model almost never originates here. It reads native files from the major mechanical and industrial design packages along with the common interchange formats, keeping the part structure and the assembly hierarchy so materials can be assigned by component rather than by selecting faces. A live link keeps the scene updated when the source model changes, so a revision does not mean rebuilding the shot.
The material library is the other half. Several thousand ready materials covering metals, plastics, glass, liquids, fabrics, paints, woods and specialist finishes, all physically based, all adjustable, and all droppable straight onto geometry. Labels can be placed on curved surfaces with proper projection, textures can be mapped without unwrapping, and the node based material editor is there when a preset is not enough.
Lighting is done with environments rather than by placing lamps, though physical lights are available too. An image based environment lights the whole scene realistically and can be edited in place, adding, moving and resizing highlights directly on the sphere while watching the effect on the product. Output covers stills at any resolution, turntable and camera animations, configurable product variants from one scene, and interactive web ready output the Pro level unlocks.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | 64 bit multicore, core count directly affects render speed |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for large assemblies |
| Graphics | 8 GB VRAM for GPU rendering, a CPU only path is available |
| Storage | 20 GB for the application and libraries |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher, calibrated for colour critical work |
GPU rendering needs the whole scene to fit in video memory. Large assemblies with high resolution textures will fall back to the CPU path.
Keep the live link source model where it was when you set the link up. Moving it silently breaks the update path.
