LightBurn replaced an awkward two application workflow with one. Before it, laser work meant drawing in a vector editor, exporting, importing into a sender that could not edit anything, and going back and forth every time a cut line needed moving. LightBurn draws, edits and drives the machine, so a correction takes seconds and the file you are looking at is the file that will run.
The drawing tools are a genuine vector editor rather than a token one. Bezier editing with node control, boolean operations, offsetting inward and outward, welding, array duplication along a line or a grid, text on a path with full font handling and variable text for serialised jobs, and image import with dithering and threshold controls for photo engraving. Files import from every common vector and image format with layers intact.
The machine side is where the depth is. Layers carry their own power, speed, pass count, interval and air assist settings, and the ordering can be set explicitly so inner cuts run before the outer profile releases the part. Cut, scan, fill and offset fill modes each have their own parameters. Overscan handles the acceleration at the ends of a scan line, tabs hold a part in place after the profile cuts, and the material library stores tested settings by material and thickness so a job that worked once works again.
Setup covers the common controller families with the correct communication path for each, camera alignment for positioning a job over material already on the bed, rotary attachment support with correct step calculation, and a framing preview that traces the job outline before anything fires. Job time estimation, cut preview with the actual head path and a simulation speed control let you see exactly what the machine will do before it does it.
