WinRAR Professional
The archiver that reads everything and writes RAR and ZIP properly, with recovery records, solid archives and multi volume splitting.
A maintenance suite that cleans, defragments, tunes startup and privacy settings and monitors the machine from one panel rather than a folder of separate tools.
This is the one panel approach to machine maintenance. Rather than running a disk cleaner, then a registry tool, then something to look at startup entries, then something else to check for privacy traces, it runs a configurable set of passes in sequence and reports what it found in one list. For a machine that has been in service for a few years and never had anything done to it, the first run usually recovers a meaningful amount of disk space and a noticeable amount of boot time.
The cleaning side covers temporary files, browser caches across every installed browser, log files, leftover installer payloads, orphaned registry entries, broken shortcuts and duplicate files. Each category can be reviewed before anything is deleted, and there is a restore point taken before registry work so a bad result can be undone. The duplicate finder in particular tends to recover more space than anything else on a machine that has been used for photographs.
The tuning side is where the boot time comes from. Startup entries are listed with an assessment of what each one actually is and how much it costs at boot, scheduled tasks are shown alongside them, and services can be adjusted from the same list. There is a per application optimisation mode that suspends background activity while a game or a heavy application is in the foreground, and a memory release routine for machines that are short of it.
Around that sit the monitoring and privacy tools. A performance monitor in a small floating panel showing processor, memory, disk and network with a temperature reading, a browser protection component that resets hijacked search and homepage settings, a privacy sweep that clears traces across applications, a driver check, a disk defragmenter that handles both mechanical and solid state hardware correctly, and a scheduled automatic care routine so the whole thing runs without being asked.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Any x86 or x64 processor, 1 GHz or faster |
|---|---|
| Memory | 2 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended |
| Graphics | Any adapter |
| Storage | 500 MB free |
| Display | 1024 by 768 minimum |
Review the registry results before applying them rather than accepting everything. Automatic registry cleaning is the one part of this category that occasionally removes something that was in use.
Turn the automatic care schedule down to weekly. Running a full pass daily gains nothing and simply adds wear.
