About this release

Portraiture is the plugin that made high volume retouching viable. Manual skin work through frequency separation produces the best result and takes twenty minutes a frame, which is fine for one hero image and impossible for four hundred portraits from a school shoot or a conference. Portraiture does the tonal smoothing automatically while leaving the texture that makes skin look like skin, and it does it in seconds.

The mask is the part that matters. It builds a skin tone mask from the image itself, sampled either automatically or from points you pick, and confines everything it does to that mask. Eyes, lips, hair, jewellery, clothing and background are untouched, which is why the result does not have the plastic quality that a blanket blur produces. The mask can be previewed on its own, adjusted for hue, saturation and luminance range, and feathered at its edges.

Smoothing is split across detail scales rather than applied as one blur. Fine, medium and large detail each have their own strength, so you can flatten uneven tone across a cheek while keeping pores and fine lines intact. Alongside the smoothing there are enhancement controls for sharpness, softness, warmth, tint, brightness and contrast, applied inside the mask, which handles the small colour corrections skin usually needs at the same time.

It installs as a filter in Photoshop and as an external editor plugin in Lightroom, and the Photoshop version works on smart objects so the effect stays adjustable. Presets cover the common cases from a light pass on a well lit studio portrait to heavy work on difficult available light, and custom presets save the whole configuration including the mask settings. Batch processing runs a preset across a folder, which is the entire point on a large job.

What you get

  • Automatic skin tone mask generation with manual sampling and refinement
  • Mask preview with hue, saturation and luminance range adjustment and edge feathering
  • Smoothing split across fine, medium and large detail scales with independent strength
  • Texture preservation so pores and fine lines survive the smoothing pass
  • Enhancement controls for sharpness, softness, warmth, tint, brightness and contrast inside the mask
  • Preset library covering studio, available light and heavy correction cases
  • Custom presets saving the full configuration including mask settings
  • Batch processing of a preset across an entire folder
  • Smart object support in Photoshop so the effect remains adjustable
  • Lightroom integration as an external editor with round trip back to the catalogue

Changes in this build

  • Mask generation retrained, with better results on darker skin tones and mixed lighting
  • Faster processing on high resolution files with a rewritten detail separation pass
  • Preset browser reorganised with a live preview on the current image
  • Batch processing now writes a log so failures in a large run are visible
  • High resolution display scaling fixed in the plugin interface

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Close Photoshop and Lightroom completely before you start.
  2. Unpack the archive to a temporary folder.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and confirm the host applications it detects.
  4. Copy the included licensing file into the path named in the readme.
  5. Start the host application and find the plugin under the filter menu, or as an external editor in Lightroom.
  6. Block the plugin's helper in your firewall if it tries to reach out on first use.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, quad core recommended for batch work
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for high resolution batches
GraphicsAny GPU with current drivers
Storage300 MB free
Host applicationPhotoshop or Lightroom, recent year build, 64 bit

Notes from the desk

Sample the mask manually on mixed lighting. The automatic sample is good on even light and struggles when half the face is in shade.

Run it on a duplicate layer or a smart object. Applying it destructively removes the option to dial it back later.
