About this release

This one has survived as long as it has because it is a single portable executable with a very short path to a result. There is nothing to install, no components to unpack and no service left behind. You run it, the interface reports what edition it found and what state that edition is currently in, and one button handles the rest. For a technician working through a stack of machines that is the entire appeal.

Underneath the one button front is a manual mode that exposes every method the tool knows. You can pick the licensing route yourself, point it at a specific product on the machine rather than letting it choose, set the renewal interval, or run the whole thing without the interface at all through command line switches, which is what makes it usable from a deployment script or a maintenance stick.

The information side deserves a mention because most tools in this category do not bother. It lists every product installed, the edition and channel of each, the current state, the remaining period where one applies, and the identifiers involved. Even if you never press the main button, it is a useful way of finding out what a machine you inherited actually has on it.

Everything it does is reversible from inside the tool. There is a clean removal option that clears the state it created, deletes the scheduled task it registered and leaves the machine as it found it. It covers the client editions from Windows 7 forward, the server editions, and the Office suites from 2010 through the current perpetual releases, including the standalone applications, Project and Visio.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Extract the archive to a folder with no spaces in the path.
2. Add that folder to your antivirus exclusions before you run anything.
3. Right click the executable and choose Run as administrator.
4. Check the information panel first to see what the machine currently reports.
5. Use the main button, or open manual mode if you want to choose the method.
6. Reboot and check the state again from the same panel.
