About this release

Hard Disk Sentinel watches every storage device in the machine and tells you, in a number, how much life is left in it. That sounds like the vague health readout every other tool offers, but this one interprets the underlying attributes rather than passing them through, so a drive that reports itself as fine while quietly reallocating sectors gets flagged here long before it fails outright.

It reads the full attribute set from mechanical drives, solid state drives, external enclosures, drives behind most RAID controllers, and network attached devices. Health and performance are shown as separate percentages, with the specific attribute that is dragging a score down named explicitly. Temperature is tracked continuously with maximum and average history, which is how you find a drive that is fine at idle and cooking during long transfers.

The professional tier is the one with the surface tests and the alerting. Surface tests include a read pass, a write pass, a full reinitialise that rewrites every sector to force reallocation of weak ones, and a random seek test. Alerting can raise a message, send mail, run a program, sound an alarm or shut the machine down, triggered by health falling, temperature rising or a new bad sector appearing. There is also an automatic backup trigger so a failing drive starts copying itself somewhere safe on its own.

The reporting side keeps a long history of every attribute so you can see a trend rather than a snapshot, which is the difference between replacing a drive on schedule and replacing it after it dies. It also reports total power on hours, total data written, estimated remaining lifetime for solid state devices, and the full device identification including the actual firmware revision. It sits in the tray, uses almost nothing while idle, and only speaks up when something changes.

What you get

  • Health and performance scored separately with the limiting attribute named explicitly
  • Support for mechanical, solid state, external, most RAID attached and network storage
  • Continuous temperature tracking with maximum and average history per device
  • Surface tests including read, write, full reinitialise and random seek
  • Alerting by message, mail, program execution, alarm sound or automatic shutdown
  • Automatic backup trigger that starts copying when a drive begins failing
  • Long term attribute history so degradation shows as a trend rather than an event
  • Power on hours, total data written and estimated remaining lifetime reporting
  • Full device identification including model, serial and firmware revision
  • Tray resident operation with negligible idle resource use

Changes in this build

  • Support added for current generation solid state controllers and their attribute layouts
  • Improved detection of drives behind newer RAID and USB bridge chipsets
  • Surface test engine faster on high capacity mechanical drives
  • Alert configuration rebuilt with per device rules rather than one global set
  • History graphs redrawn and now readable on high resolution displays

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
  2. Disconnect from the network before running setup.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and choose whether to run it as a service or a tray application.
  4. Do not launch from the finish screen.
  5. Copy the included patched executable over the one in the install directory.
  6. Start the application and let it complete its first full device scan before you judge any score.

Notes from the desk

A health score below one hundred is not automatically a dying drive, but a score that keeps falling week on week is. The trend matters more than the number.

The full reinitialise surface test destroys everything on the drive. It is the correct tool for reviving a spare and the wrong one for a disk holding data.
