Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
Building information modelling where the drawings, schedules and sections are all views of one model, with the whole documentation set updating the moment the model changes.
ArchiCAD works on one principle and applies it consistently: there is a single building model, and every plan, section, elevation, detail, schedule and three dimensional view is a live view of it. Move a wall and the section through that wall changes, the door schedule updates, the area calculation recalculates and the sheet in the layout book redraws. The drawing set stops being a set of files that have to be kept in agreement with each other.
The modelling tools are built from building elements rather than generic geometry. Walls know they are walls, with composite layer structures, junction resolution against other walls and correct behaviour when a window is placed in them. Slabs, beams, columns, roofs, shells, curtain walls, stairs and railings all carry their own parameters and their own rules. The stair tool in particular does the code compliance arithmetic while you drag, which is the sort of thing that takes an afternoon by hand.
Documentation is where the time is actually saved. The layout book holds the sheets, drawings are placed on them with automatic titles and scales, and revision management tracks issues with change markers and a transmittal set. Schedules are queries over the model, so a window schedule is a filtered list of the actual windows rather than a table someone types. Publisher pushes the entire set to PDF, DWG or a print queue in one action with the naming and folder structure you defined once.
It plays well with everything around it. IFC import and export is mature enough to be relied on for coordination, DWG round trips cleanly with layer and pen mapping you control, point clouds import for survey work, and the model can be linked with structural and services models with clash visibility. Teamwork lets several people work in the same model at once with element level reservation, and the rendering engine handles presentation output without an export to a separate package.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, 64 bit, four cores or more, high clock speed helps |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB recommended for large projects |
| Graphics | 4 GB VRAM minimum, 8 GB for large models and rendering |
| Storage | 25 GB free, SSD strongly recommended |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 minimum, a second screen is close to essential |
Install the object library along with the application. Opening a project without it produces a model full of missing element placeholders.
Keep project files on local storage while you work. Running a large model directly from a network share causes save failures.
