CATIA V5 is the CAD system that a very large part of the aerospace and automotive supply chain standardised on, and it is still the format many primes hand out and expect back. Platform 3 is the widest configuration, which means the surfacing workbenches, the advanced assembly and kinematics tools, the analysis modules and the manufacturing workbenches are all present rather than the subset that comes with the lower platforms.
The application is organised into workbenches rather than one merged environment, which is unusual now but makes sense once you are inside it. Part Design for solid modelling with a full parametric history, Generative Shape Design for surfaces, Assembly Design for structures and constraints, Drafting for output, plus the specialised environments: sheet metal, composites, tubing, electrical harness, mould tooling and structural design. Each one has its own toolbars and its own logic, and moving between them is how the work actually flows.
Surfacing is what CATIA is famous for. Generative Shape Design and the class A tools in the Freestyle and ICEM derived workbenches give continuity control fine enough for exterior body panels, with curvature analysis, reflection lines and zebra striping to prove the surface is clean before it goes anywhere. The knowledge tooling is the other differentiator: parameters, formulas, rules, checks and design tables let a model carry its own engineering intent so a variant is a table row rather than a rebuild.
Assembly handling scales to very large structures with publications, contextual links, flexible sub assemblies and full kinematic simulation with clash and clearance analysis. Drafting produces fully associative drawings with the annotation standards these industries require. Data exchange through STEP, IGES and the native formats is mature, and the CATPart and CATProduct files this produces are what the rest of the chain is expecting to receive.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Install the base release before the service pack. Applying the pack to a partial install leaves workbenches that fail to load.
CATIA leans on single thread performance far more than core count. A fast clock beats a high core count here.
