About this release

Driver Easy solves the problem of a fresh Windows install where half the hardware works at a generic level and the other half does not work at all. It reads the hardware identifiers straight off the bus, matches them against a large driver database, and installs what is missing or out of date. The professional tier is the one that installs everything in a single pass at full speed rather than one device at a time with a wait between each.

The scan is genuinely thorough. Chipset, storage controllers, network adapters, audio codecs, graphics, card readers, touchpads, fingerprint readers, cameras, printers and the odd manufacturer specific devices that no generic driver covers. Each result shows the current version against the available version, and you decide what gets updated rather than being pushed into taking everything.

Backup and restore are the parts that make it safe to use. Before it changes anything it can snapshot the existing drivers to a folder or an archive, so a bad update is one restore away. It also creates a system restore point on request. The uninstall tool removes leftovers from previous graphics drivers properly, which is the common cause of a machine that behaves strangely after a card swap.

The offline scan is the feature that saves a machine with no working network adapter. On a working computer you generate a hardware profile file, carry it to the broken machine, and it produces exactly the driver set needed, which you then install without a connection. There is also a scheduler for periodic checks, a hardware information page, and an option to prefer signed manufacturer packages over generic ones.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
2. Disconnect from the network before running setup.
3. Run the installer as administrator.
4. Do not launch the application from the finish screen.
5. Copy the included patched executable over the one in the install directory.
6. Block the executable in your firewall, then start it from the Start menu and run the first scan.
