About this release

DiskGenius covers the whole range of disk work in a single window, from routine partitioning through to pulling files off a drive that no longer mounts. That combination is what keeps it on service technician toolkits. Instead of one tool to resize, another to clone, another to recover and a fourth to inspect the partition table, everything is in one place and they all operate on the same live view of the disk.

Partition work handles the usual operations without a reboot where it can: create, delete, format, resize, move, split, merge, convert between the two partition table styles, change identifiers, hide, and set the active flag. Free space can be redistributed between adjacent partitions in one operation. The application understands the common file systems for both reading and writing, including the ones that Windows can normally only mount and not manage.

Recovery is genuinely capable rather than a token feature. A deleted file scan reads the file system structures, a full scan reads the whole surface and rebuilds files from their signatures, and a lost partition scan finds partitions that were removed or overwritten in the table and can restore them intact. Recovered items preview before you write them out, so a scan that turns up ten thousand fragments does not have to be exported blindly. Recovery from formatted, corrupted and unreadable volumes is supported, and the tool operates read only on the source unless you explicitly tell it otherwise.

The rest fills out the toolkit. Sector by sector cloning and imaging with a bad sector handling policy, migration of a system volume to a new drive with the boot configuration fixed automatically, a hex editor that operates on files, partitions or the raw disk, surface scanning with a per sector map, secure erase, virtual disk file mounting and creation, and a bootable environment that you can write to a USB stick for the machines that will not start at all.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
2. Close anything that has files open on the drives you intend to work on.
3. Run the installer as administrator. Disk tools without administrator rights can only look, not act.
4. Close the installer instead of launching from it.
5. Start the application from the Start menu and let it enumerate every attached device before you touch anything.
6. Build the bootable USB environment from within the application while everything is still working, not after something breaks.
