D5 Render is a real time renderer aimed squarely at architectural visualisation. You keep modelling in whatever package you already use, and D5 shows the scene lit, textured and ray traced at interactive frame rates while you work. The change from an offline renderer is not incremental. Decisions about light, material and camera that used to take a test render each are made by looking at the viewport, and the final output becomes a formality rather than an overnight gamble.
The synchronisation plugins are what make it practical. Connectors for the common modelling and building information packages push geometry, cameras and material assignments across live, so moving a wall in the model moves it in the render without an export. Changes propagate in seconds on scenes that would take many minutes to re-export through a file based path, which means the modeller and the visualiser can be the same person working in one loop.
Lighting is physically based with a real sun and sky model, and it is driven by relative time of day and orientation rather than by fiddling with light objects. Interior lighting uses real luminaires with photometric profiles, and global illumination is computed continuously rather than baked, so opening a curtain changes the whole room immediately. Volumetric fog, caustics, refraction and depth of field are all handled in the same pass, and there is a full post processing stack with exposure, white balance, curves, bloom and lens effects applied live.
The included library is large enough that most interior scenes can be dressed without going elsewhere. Furniture, lighting fixtures, plants, vehicles, people, decorative objects and a deep material set with real scanned surfaces. Assets are streamed from a local library folder rather than embedded in the scene file, so projects stay small. Output covers still images at print resolution, animation along camera paths with easing, panoramas for headset viewing, and a video export with motion blur.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Hardware ray tracing is not optional. On a GPU without it the viewport falls back to a mode that removes most of the reason to use the application.
Keep the asset library and the scene files on the same fast drive. Streaming assets across a network share stalls the viewport badly.
