CCleaner Professional Plus

About this release

CCleaner has been the default answer to a slow Windows install for two decades, and the Professional Plus bundle is the version that includes the three companion tools rather than the cleaner alone. Those are Defraggler for drive defragmentation, Recuva for recovering deleted files, and Speccy for reading out exactly what hardware is in the machine. All four install together and share one licence.

The cleaner itself works on two lists. The Windows list covers browser caches, temporary directories, the recycle bin, thumbnail caches, log files, memory dumps, prefetch data and the trail of recently opened document entries. The Applications list is generated from what is actually installed and covers the caches and histories of everything from browsers to media players to development tools. You choose what goes and what stays, and there is an analysis pass that shows the total before anything is removed.

The registry cleaner is the part people argue about. It finds orphaned file extensions, missing shared libraries, unused application paths, invalid shortcuts and leftover uninstaller entries. It backs up every change to a restorable file before it acts, which is the reason it is safe to use. The health check screen bundles the common maintenance passes into one button for people who do not want to read a list.

Professional additions on top of the free product are the scheduler, real time monitoring that cleans as junk accumulates rather than in a batch, automatic browser cleaning when the browser closes, driver updates, software update checking across installed applications, and the file shredder with multi pass overwrite for drives you are handing on. Startup management, browser plugin control, duplicate finding, disk analysis and full uninstall management are all in the tools section.

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
2. Disconnect from the network before running the installer.
3. Run setup as administrator and clear the checkbox that installs the browser component if you do not want it.
4. Do not launch from the finish screen.
5. Run the included registration helper as administrator to apply the licence to all four tools.
6. Block the updater in your firewall and start CCleaner from the Start menu.
