About this release

BlueStacks puts a complete Android environment inside a desktop window. Applications built for a phone install and run against your actual processor, memory and graphics card instead of a handset, which means the frame rate is limited by your machine rather than by a battery and a thermal ceiling. For anything with a touch interface that you would rather drive with a keyboard, this is the practical way to do it on a desktop.

The input mapping is the part that makes it usable rather than merely possible. You draw controls onto the screen, bind them to keys, a mouse or a connected gamepad, and save the layout per application. Twin stick style movement, tap spots, swipe gestures, aim on the mouse and scroll wheel zoom are all bindable. Layouts can be exported and imported, so a scheme that works can move between machines.

Multi instance is the other reason people install it. You can run several independent environments at once, each with its own storage, its own signed in state and its own window, and the instance manager can clone a configured one rather than making you set each up from scratch. Synchronised input mirrors your keyboard and mouse into every open instance simultaneously, and the macro recorder replays a captured sequence on a schedule or a keypress.

Underneath it is a proper virtualisation layer rather than a compatibility shim. It exposes hardware accelerated graphics through your own drivers, supports both the older and newer Android runtimes so old applications keep working, allocates a configurable slice of cores and memory, and shares a folder with the host so files move in and out without a network hop. Resolution, DPI and frame rate ceiling are all set per instance.

What you get

  • Full Android runtime on the desktop with hardware accelerated graphics through your own drivers
  • Keyboard, mouse and gamepad mapping with per application layouts that export and import
  • Multi instance manager with cloning, independent storage and independent signed in state
  • Synchronised input that mirrors keyboard and mouse across every open instance
  • Macro recorder for capturing and replaying sequences on a key or a timer
  • Selectable runtime versions so older applications that refuse newer builds still install
  • Configurable core count, memory allocation, resolution, DPI and frame rate ceiling
  • Shared folder between the host and the Android storage for moving files in and out
  • Native application installation from local package files as well as from the built in store front
  • Advertising and promotional panels removed from the launcher and the sidebar

Changes in this build

  • Graphics backend reworked for noticeably better frame pacing on mid range hardware
  • Instance manager cloning is faster and no longer duplicates the full storage image
  • Gamepad detection fixed for several controllers that previously needed a manual binding
  • Reduced idle memory use when more than two instances are open
  • Fixed a case where the shared folder would unmount after the host went to sleep

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Enable virtualisation in your machine firmware first. Without it the runtime falls back to software rendering and crawls.
  2. Extract the archive to a local drive with fifteen gigabytes free.
  3. Uninstall any earlier BlueStacks build and delete the leftover data folder in your user profile.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and let it complete without interrupting it.
  5. Close the installer instead of launching from it.
  6. Copy the contents of the unlock folder into the installation directory, overwriting when asked.
  7. Start the launcher and set your instance memory and core allocation before installing anything.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, four cores or more with virtualisation enabled
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for more than two instances
Graphics2 GB VRAM with an up to date driver, 4 GB for heavy titles
Storage15 GB free on an SSD, more per additional instance
Display1920 by 1080

Notes from the desk

Leave virtualisation enabled in firmware. Some security features on Windows 11 turn it off again, and the runtime becomes unusable if they do.

Each additional instance takes real memory. Two on eight gigabytes is fine, four is not.
