Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application everything else is measured against, with the full 2D documentation toolset, 3D modelling, and the specialised industry toolsets included.
A complete 3D pipeline in one application, covering modelling, sculpting, UVs, texturing, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and video editing.
Blender covers more of a 3D pipeline than any other single application. You can block a shape out with box modelling, take it into sculpt mode and push it to several million faces, retopologise it, unwrap the UVs, paint the textures directly on the mesh, rig it, animate it, light it, render it, composite the render and cut the result into a finished sequence, all without leaving the program or exporting anything.
The modelling toolset is the part most people meet first. Full non destructive modifier stack with subdivision, mirror, array, boolean, solidify, shrinkwrap and lattice deformation. Proper edge, vertex and face editing with loop cuts, bevels, insets, knife projection and snapping. Geometry Nodes sits alongside all of that as a procedural system where you build meshes and scatter instances from a node graph that stays editable forever.
Rendering is handled by two engines that share the same scene. Cycles is a physically based path tracer with GPU acceleration across the major hardware vendors, volumetrics, subsurface scattering, caustics and adaptive sampling with denoising. EEVEE is the rasteriser, and it has grown into something you can genuinely finish work in rather than only preview with, handling screen space reflections, soft shadows, ambient occlusion and depth of field at interactive speed.
Around the core sit the parts people forget are included. A grease pencil system for drawing 2D animation inside a 3D space. Cloth, fluid, smoke, rigid body and soft body simulation. A particle and hair system with grooming tools. Motion tracking with camera solve and object tracking. A node based compositor. A non linear video editor. And a Python API that reaches almost every operator in the program, which is why the add on ecosystem around it is so large.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | 64 bit quad core with SSE 4.2, more cores help every simulation |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 32 GB for sculpting and heavy simulation |
| Graphics | 4 GB VRAM minimum, 8 GB or more for GPU rendering in Cycles |
| Storage | 3 GB for the install plus a fast drive for caches and render output |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 with a three button mouse strongly recommended |
Simulation caches are written to the temporary folder by default. Point that somewhere with room before you start a fluid sim.
Add ons written for the previous major version usually need updating. Install them one at a time so you can see which one breaks startup.
