The animation and modelling package most large productions are built around, with the full rigging, simulation and rendering stack and the plugin path left open.
Maya is the package that character work in film, television and games is largely built on, and the reason is the rigging and animation side rather than the modelling. The dependency graph underneath the application means almost anything can drive almost anything else, deformers stack in a defined order you control, and a rig built by one person opens and behaves identically for the animator down the corridor. That predictability is worth more on a production than any single feature.
The animation toolset is the deepest part. Graph editor with proper tangent control, time editor for non linear clip based work, layered animation, the full constraint set, motion trails you can edit directly in the viewport, ghosting, and a retiming workflow that does not destroy your curves. Skinning covers both smooth and dual quaternion with a paint interface, ngSkin style weight layers through plugins, and a pose based corrective system for the places a joint alone will never look right.
Modelling and UV work are complete rather than exceptional, and that is usually enough. Polygon and NURBS both, a modelling toolkit with the symmetry, bevel, bridge, multi cut and quad draw tools, retopology, sculpting for detail passes, and a UV editor with automatic unfold, packing and multi tile layouts. Bifrost handles procedural work and simulation through a graph, covering fluids, aggregates, scattering and destruction, and nCloth, nHair and nParticles remain for the classic dynamics jobs.
Rendering ships with Arnold included, which means physically based shading, area lights, subsurface, volumetrics and an interactive render view that updates as you work. USD support runs through the scene, so assets, layers and variants move between packages without a rebuild, and the plugin directory is left writable so the studio tools everyone actually depends on register normally.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Install Maya before any studio plugins. Plugins that install first will not find the application path.
Set your project directory on first launch. Working outside a project structure causes broken texture paths later.
