Inventor is mechanical design software in the strict sense. Everything you build has a history, every feature is driven by dimensions and constraints you can change afterwards, and the whole model is designed around the assumption that a real part gets made at the end of it. Sketch, constrain, extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, pattern, fillet and shell, with the model tree recording the order so a change at step four propagates through everything after it.
Assemblies are the reason people choose it over a pure modeller. Components are placed and constrained against each other with joints that describe how they actually move, so a mechanism can be dragged through its range of motion and checked for interference before anything is cut. Large assemblies use level of detail and shrinkwrap representations to stay openable, and the frame generator, bolted connection generator and shaft, gear and spring calculators build standard components to the specification you enter rather than making you model them.
The Professional tier adds the analysis work. Stress analysis with meshing, material assignment, constraints, loads and a result viewer that shows displacement, stress and factor of safety. Dynamic simulation for mechanisms under load. Tolerance analysis that tells you whether a stack of parts within their individual tolerances still assembles. Mould design, tube and pipe routing, and cable and harness routing all sit in the same tier.
Documentation and exchange finish the job. Drawings are views of the model with automatic dimensioning, balloons, parts lists driven by the bill of materials, section and detail views, and a full set of annotation standards. iLogic drives configurable products from rules and a form, so a family of sizes becomes one model rather than fifty files. Import from other mechanical formats brings geometry in as editable features where it can, and DWG, STEP, IGES, JT and Parasolid all round trip.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Set up your project file and library paths before you start modelling. Moving files afterwards breaks assembly references in a way that is tedious to repair.
Install the content centre libraries you actually use rather than all of them. The full set is enormous and slows the first launch considerably.
